From sending instant messages to research and development, Internet has taken over pretty much every aspect of our lives. As the world celebrates International Internet Day on Oct. 29, let’s look at some interesting facts about the digital world.


1 - Humans only make up around 40 percent of the Internet traffic; the rest is all made by bots. While there are "good" bots such as search engines and analytical tools, the "bad" ones - like the ones that make spam - also account for considerable traffic.

2 - Your search engine results are just the tip of the iceberg and are called the “Surface Web.” The actual secret unindexed websites that require special browsers and are accessible only to a select few are called the “Deep Web,” and its pool at least 500 times larger.

3 - It took Internet a mere three years to reach 50 million users. The television took 13 years and the radio managed to achieve the same goal in 18 years.

4 - The first website, info.cern.ch was created way back in 1991 and and explained the concept of the World Wide Web to newcomers. It's still up and running.

5 - Around 19 percent of couples in the world met for the first time because of Internet.

6 - Pornography continues to be the major source of Internet traffic. One-third of all Internet searches are porn related and a staggering 65% of images posted on the net are of naked women.

7 - The concept of the web camera originated in 1993 in Cambridge University where it was used to monitor a coffee pot.

8 - Today, almost 40 percent of the world's seven billion people are connected to the Internet.

9 - As of 2015, Facebook has around 1.49 billion monthly active users.

10 -China leads the world in terms of the total number of Internet users with over 630 million people. Norway, however, has the highest percentage of its population using the Internet at 95.05 percent.

11 - With satellite access, there is no part of the world that is not connected to the internet, though governments of some regions have imposed strict regulations over its us.

12 - A single Google query makes use of 1,000 computers and arrives at an answer in 0.2 seconds.

13 - A group of 14 people (equally divided into two groups) meet four times a year as part of the "Key Ceremony." These 14 people belong to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and are the ones who actually control the way we navigate the Internet. The organization is responsible for assigning numerical Internet addresses to websites and computers and translating them into the normal web addresses that people type into their browsers.

14 - Chinese social networking website Sina Weibo has 280.8 million users.

15 - Twitter, on the other hand, has around 314 million monthly users and generates 500 million tweets per day.

21 - Over 100,000 new dot com domains are registered on the internet every day.

22 - Around 90 percent of all the emails sent around the world each day are spam.

23 - In 2010, Finland made internet access a legal right for its citizens, the first country in the world to do so.

24 - According to website Internet Live Stats, there are over 940 million live websites on the Internet right now.
